Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about playing chess against the computer

Is this chess computer really free to use?
Yes, completely free — no hidden costs, no daily game limit, and no account required. Play unlimited games against the chess computer without any subscriptions or ads interrupting your game.
What difficulty levels are available?
We offer 15 carefully calibrated difficulty levels from absolute beginner (Level 1) to maximum engine strength (Level 15). Level 10 provides a good challenge for intermediate players. Each level represents a meaningful increase in playing strength.
How strong is the Stockfish chess engine?
Stockfish is the world's strongest open-source chess engine with an estimated rating above 3500 Elo at maximum strength — far beyond any human grandmaster. At lower difficulty levels, the engine deliberately plays weaker moves to match your skill level.
Can I start a game from a specific position?
Yes. Open the Advanced Options panel and paste a FEN string into the FEN field to start the game from any custom position. This is useful for practicing a specific opening setup, studying an endgame scenario, or continuing from a position you want to explore.
Does it work on mobile devices?
Yes — the chess board is fully optimized for smartphones and tablets. The board uses touch drag-and-drop so you can place pieces with your finger. The layout adapts automatically to narrow screens. No app download is required; it works directly in your mobile browser.
How do I save or review my game?
Click "Download PGN" to export your finished game as a PGN file. You can then import this into any chess software — such as Lichess, Chess.com, or ChessBase — to replay and review your moves in detail.
Can I take back moves?
Yes. Use the back navigation arrow to undo your last move. You can step back through the game to explore different lines or try an alternative move at any point.
What is the difference between playing White and Black?
Playing as White means you move first and have the initiative from the start. Playing as Black means the computer opens and you respond. Both colors are important to practice — White focuses on maintaining the opening advantage, while Black focuses on equalizing and creating counterplay.
Why does the computer sometimes take longer to reply?
The computer calculates its move by searching through possible positions. More complex positions, particularly in the middlegame with many pieces, require more calculation time. At higher difficulty levels the engine also searches deeper, which takes slightly longer.
What is the difference between this and the Chess Analyzer or Chess Calculator?
They serve three distinct purposes. This Play page lets you play a full live game against the computer at your chosen difficulty — it is about the game experience. The Chess Analyzer is for reviewing a completed game after you have played it — it loads your PGN, scores every move by centipawn loss, and produces an accuracy report. The Chess Calculator is for evaluating a single position instantly — paste a FEN and get the engine's best move and evaluation for that one position in seconds. Use this page to play; use the Analyzer to review; use the Calculator to check a specific position.
Is this suitable for complete beginners?
Yes. Level 1 and Level 2 are specifically designed for absolute beginners. The computer plays simple moves to help you learn basic chess principles without feeling overwhelmed. As your skills grow, gradually increase the difficulty level to keep the challenge appropriate for your current strength.
